I feel like I’m in some sort of sick and twisted dream. I’m sitting here in Annabelle and Joshua’s living room, drinking wine and listening to Brandon defend Maddison’s actions before telling us that they’re together now and that they are engaged.

What a great time I’m having…not.

I gulp down the remainder of the wine in my glass while everyone sits in silence. I’m sure no one knows what to say. My heart is literally melting and turning to ash. All I can think about is getting out of here, and not having to deal with the pain that’s eating me up inside. My stomach is all in knots and I feel sick. I’m thinking about where to go so I can be alone and maybe even drown myself in the deliciousness that is vodka.

Standing on shaky legs. “I’m going to go out for some fresh air. I think this wine has gone to my head.” I giggle like a silly school girl, and I’m not sure where that came from. I turn to Brandon and Maddison. “Congratulations…I hope you’re really happy together.” I can feel my eyes moistening and I’m determined not to cry in front of them. I wouldn’t want to give Maddison the satisfaction because deep down I’m convinced that she’s enjoying this. She might be sitting there all sweet and innocent, but I haven’t been lulled into thinking that she’s actually genuine right now. I thought Brandon would give me a smile and thank me, but when I look into his eyes all I can see is pain and something else that I’m not sure about. He just stares at me and it’s Maddison that smiles widely before answering me.

“Thank you so much, Lily. It means a lot to both of us that you’re okay with this. I hope we can be friends?”

Is she for real? I plaster on a smile.

“Uh…yeah, sure.” I make my way out of the living room and put on my coat and boots. I can hear Ella and Aunt Sylvia talking upstairs. They keep giggling about something, and to be honest, I think it’s better that they’re up there because it’s all kinds of frosty down here. I’m just reaching for the door handle when the door opens and Tracy and Karl appear.

“Oops…sorry Lily didn’t see you there.” Karl sidesteps so I can get around him. Tracy keeps giggling and looking at Karl.

“Lily, I have some good news,” she squeals and jumps up and down. “Karl and I…we’re—”

“Yeah, that’s great, Tracy. See you.” I rush out of the door cutting her off before she has a chance to finish. I’m really not up for hearing good news right now, and I’m guessing it’s to do with Karl being okay with the baby. I’m really not up for a pregnant woman gushing over how perfect her life is when mine is obviously not. I have to get away from the house for a while because if I’m being honest seeing Brandon again has thrown me.
